The Chronicles of Narnia

The stunning table Mountains and Kamienczyk Waterfall filled in for some fantasy scenes in both episodes of "The Chronicles of Narnia", directed by Andrew Adamson: "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and "Prince Caspian". One of the scenes shows also the characters crossing the frozen lake, which was shot by Lake Siemianowka in Bialowieza Forest.

Schindler's List

While the Oscar-winning "Schindler's List" by Steven Spielberg was shot in a variety of locations, Cracow filled in for a reasonable number of settings: Oscar Schindler’s Factory, Cracow Main Square, Krakow Glowny Railway station,  Pilsudski Bridge and the old Jewish quarter Kazimierz. Some of the filming took place also beside the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp.

The Pianist

Based on the autobiography of Wladyslaw Szpilman, “The Pianist” by Roman Polanski tells the story of a Polish Jewish who survived the Holocaust with the help of Poles and a Nazi officer after he escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. Polish locations included the Saski Hotel, which filled in for a Jewish bar in the movie, Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street, as well as Zabkowska and Stalowa Streets in Praga District. Stalowa Street had even a tramway temporarily laid for the purpose of shooting the movie.

Out of reach

Billy Ray Lancing (Steven Seagal), a former American intelligence agent, discovers that the foster program in Eastern Europe he is supporting is actually a human trafficking network and so he heads overseas to find the girl he has been helping and shut down the operation. Several Warsaw locations were used in the “Out of Reach” movie, including the Palace of Science and Culture, University of Warsaw Library, Warsaw Old Town and Warsaw University of Technology.

Inland Empire

David Lynch’s favourite city, Lodz served as the film set for some of the scenes in “Inland Empire”, with Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons and Justin Theroux. The Grand Hotel, Srodmiescie District, Moniuszki and Wschodnia Streets helped to evoke the dark and surrealist character of the movie.

The Reader

“The Reader” , starring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet, tells the story of a passionate but secretive affair between teenager Michael Berg and Hanna, a former SS camp guard at Auschwitz. As the secrets of Hanna’s past emerge, we see some of the Holocaust scenes shot in the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin.
