Central Waterworks in Warsaw

General

Тип блока:

It is part of the capital’s historic waterworks with a historic Rapid Filter Centre.

It is the oldest of the three waterworks in Warsaw – supplying water to the residents of Warsaw since 3rd July 1886. It is also the largest waterworks in Warsaw covering about 50 percent of the capitals water needs. It currently draws and treats water from several points below the bed of the River Vistula, from the pumping station known as “Big Katherine” and from Czerniakowski Reservoir.

The waterworks were designed by William Lindley and his son William Heerlein Lindley and from the day they were built have worked continuously. For the construction of the filters cutting-edge technology of the time was used. The primary building material were specially fired, moisture-resistant bricks which have proved their perseverance.

The buildings that were put up and the equipment used – slow filters, water tower, pumping stations, gatehouses and added in the 20th century a Rapid Filter Centre have all been classified as listed. The new carbon filtration and ionization plant, with a surface area of 12,000m², was built on the site of the already present sand filters – at the intersection of Raszynska and Filtrowa Streets. Its architecture is in keeping with with the historic character of the earlier buildings.
